Every year McNeal elementary does character education for the first six weeks of school. Every morning after Silent Sustained Reading, we work on one of the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship. During the 30 minutes we watch character videos, do activities, write in our journals, have discussions, and learn how to be better characters everywhere. About four years ago, Mr. Batty was teaching the pillar of citizenship, and we decided to plant fruit trees. Some people might ask,” Why trees for Citizenship?” Well, because as good citizens, we made the school and community look a lot better. We also helped better the environment by helping the source of oxygen you breathe in every day. The cool thing about this project is that, just last week, we spotted the first sign of the “fruits” of our labor. One of the trees had actual pears growing! Not only had we beautified and improved our environment, now we can actually nourish it for years to come. Understanding the importance of the pillars of character helps the world we live in. Remember, “Character counts all the time, and all the time, character counts.”
